AERoGELS COST Action – New members and forthcoming scientific activities

AERoGELS COST Action, the European Commission-funded initiative for engineering and research on aerogels for biomedical and environmental applications, is continuing to build its activities across Europe and beyond for enhancing awareness on aerogel research and for promoting networking. During the 2021 year, the AERoGELS COST Action has incorporated two new member countries (Japan and India) and currently comprises more than 350 participants from 47 countries. Recently, a COST-technical paper on toxicity, handling and disposal of silica aerogels has been published in Open Access. In addition, during this year 12 young European scientists have each been awarded a short-term aerogels research stay grant in prestigious institutions throughout the world.

The AERoGELS Action will also organize two scientific sessions within international conferences in the Northern-Hemisphere Summer-Fall 2021 period:

The “Symposium on aerogels for biomedical applications ” will take place in Porto (Portugal) on 7th September 2021 as a part of the “31st Conference of the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB)”, which has as a motto “development of biomaterial through advanced technologies, such as Nanotechnology, Biofabrication, Microfluidics and Bioimaging”. This ESB event provides the opportunity to establish networking and to promote cross-fertilization with the biomaterials community. The AERoGELS event is fully integrated in the ESB conference and aims to assemble and integrate the most recent scientific and technological knowledge in aerogels and other nanostructured materials applied to biomedical applications, such as pharmaceutical technology, regenerative medicine, and cosmetics.

• A Session on Gels and Porous Materials will be held in Nantes (France) on 11-15 th October 2021 and incorporated within the programme of the “7th Polysaccharide Conference of the European Polysaccharide Network of Excellence (EPNOE)”. Based on the successful experience of the COST session organized within the previous EPNOE conference in 2019, AERoGELS will further promote its interaction with leading scientists in polysaccharide chemistry and processing in the 2021 hybrid event. In particular, the AERoGELS session will mainly focus on innovative synthetic and processing methods, together with novel techniques for the characterization of bioaerogels obtained from a broad range of polysaccharides as well as in their use in environmental applications.

The AERoGELS COST Action assembles the knowledge on research and technology of aerogels at the international level of more than 200 institutions from academia, industry and regulatory experts. In the AERoGELS COST Action, the use of aerogels is mainly focused on environmental (treatment and removal of pollutants, energy management, life cycle analysis) and life sciences (pharma, biomedical, food) applications. Structureproperties correlations, regulatory aspects and circular economy approaches will be combined.
