AERoGELS COST Action – An EU Initiative on Aerogels for Biomedical and Environmental Applications
The AERoGELS COST Action, part of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology Program, is an open and living European initiative that helps to connect research on aerogels across Europe and beyond. It is an efficient networking platform for promoting awareness about aerogel technology, reinforcing existing collaborations and building new relationships.
Among other activities, AERoGELS organizes in-person and online conferences; training schools; industry-academic forums and workshops; participates in social events; and supports research exchanges and visits.
Aerogels are a special class of lightweight nanostructured materials with high, open porosity, very high internal pore surface area and tunable physicochemical properties. These properties make them extremely versatile materials for numerous applications. Aerogels can be based on inorganic materials (metal and silicon oxides), carbon, synthetic polymers and biobased polymers. Although some classes of aerogels have already reached the market in construction materials and aerospace engineering, their full potential is yet to be realized.
The AERoGELS COST Action currently involves over 350 participants in 200 Institutions from 45 countries, curating knowledge on research and technology involving aerogels at the International Level. In our initiative, the use of aerogels is mainly focused on environmental (treatment and removal of pollutants, energy management, life cycle analysis) and life sciences (pharma, biomedical, food) applications. Structure-properties correlations, regulatory aspects and circular-economy approaches are embedded in the initiative.
