The Board of Directors of the ISGS is very pleased to announce that the winner of the ISGS PhD Thesis Award 2018 is Dr. Francesca Tallia.

This award was created last year to distinguish PhD theses representing outstanding contribution to scientific and/or technological knowledge in the field of sol-gel chemistry and related fields.

The PhD Award Committee for the 2018 competition was composed of Dr. Chris Barbé (Chair), Dr. Florence Babonneau, Professor Kazuyuki Kuroda and Professor Michel Aegerter. Seven candidates competed for the award in this first edition.

Dr. Francesca Tallia’s PhD thesis, entitled “3-D printed flexible hybrids for tissue regeneration”, was supervised by Dr. Julien Jones (Professor of Biomaterials at the Department of Materials, Imperial College of London, UK).

Dr. Francesca Tallia was unanimously rated above all candidates.

The PhD Award Committtee considered that the most relevant aspects of her PhD thesis, are: (1) The very novel approach for cartilage regeneration; (2) The extremely well presented work, with a clear, logical argumentation, and clearly put into the broader context of tissue regeneration; (3) The substantial body of work from the synthesis and characterization of the hybrid solutions to the evaluation of the cell response in the seeded scaffolds.
