Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Metal Hydroxides: From Synthesis to Electrode Applications

Inorganic–organic hybrid materials have attracted significant attention due to their designability, which arises from the combination of inorganic and organic components. Layered metal hydroxides are valuable materials that serve as catalysts, electrocatalysts, ion ex-changers, etc. Their surface hydroxy groups can be covalently modified with tripodal ligands, such as tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane. This method relies on the structural matching be-tween the arrangement of surface hydroxy groups and the molecular structure of the modifier. Consequently, various constituent metals in the hydroxide layer and functional groups on the ligand can be utilised similarly. The surface modification enhances the intercalation ability of metal hydroxides and facilitates their exfoliation into nanosheets. These hybrid metal hydroxide nanosheets have been applied as self-repairing electrocatalysts and flexible mesoporous hydrogel electrodes for alkaline water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen, using the unique properties due to organic modifiers.
