The advancement of additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing has shown extraordinary potential to revolutionize many fields, including glass science and optics fabrication. My research group studies the development and characterization of sol-gel-derived colloidal feedstocks designed for fabricating optical glasses by direct ink write (DIW) AM. Our approach mainly focuses on binary silica-based feedstocks targeting specific optical properties, including improved optical transmission, tunable refractive indices, and color filter-ing. We have developed multiple sol-gel routes for synthesizing hybrid colloids of various morphologies and compositions and confirm their physical and chemical structural properties by various analytical techniques. We also investigate how colloidal feedstock structure influences material properties and glass network formation upon thermal processing and densification us-ing those same techniques.

It is our pleasure to invite you to join the ISGS eSeminar for July 2025, which will be delivered by Associate Professor Joel F Destino on Thursday 31 July. Joel joins us from Creighton University in the USA, where his group’s research focuses on the development of functional materials and analytical methods for exploring the fundamental chemistry underpinning their development. Applications being targeted include chemical sensing, separations, 3D-printing, and antifouling applications. Please click here and here to learn more about his re-search and career journey to date.
