Mesoporous oxides thin films: a starting point for the development of functional materials

Thin films are crucial for the production of a large number of electronic devices, sensors, functional coatings, and protective coatings. In some of these applications, the incorporation of controlled porosity at the mesoscale (pore diameters between 2 and 50 nm) allows for the enhancement or expansion of the films’ functionality. For this purpose, mesoporous oxide thin films (MOTFs) can be prepared in a highly controlled manner using the sol-gel method combined with the selfassembly of amphiphilic molecules, which give rise to the pores. Thus, it is possible to generate coatings of pure, mixed, or hybrid oxides, with mesopores arranged in various geometries. Once MOTFs are obtained, they can be combined with other nanomaterials, enhancing and expanding their usefulness.
In this seminar, I will present results on the preparation and characterization of MOTFs based functional materials. First, their use as building blocks for obtaining bilayer and multilayer architectures will be demonstrated, with potential applications in optical sensing. Then,
the production of composite materials based on MOTFs and metal nanoparticles with various architectures will be presented, for use as catalysts and sensors based on Raman spectroscopy. In all cases, emphasis will be placed on the importance of rationally designing and thoroughly characterizing the materials to ensure their proper functioning.
It is our pleasure to invite you to join the ISGS eSeminar for May 2025, which will be delivered by Professor Paula C. Angelomé on Thursday 22 May. Paula joins us from the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she is a Principal Researcher in the Qnano (Chemistry of Nano- materials) Group. She is currently the Vice President of the Argentinean Nanotechnology Foundation and has won several awards for her work, including the 2024 L’Oréal UNESCO National Prize for Women in Science.
