In this seminar, a perspective about corrosion behavior of different sol-gel coatings is considered. In general, the adequate performance of the different films requires considering different aspects such as the composition, sol processing conditions, deposition methods, thermal treatments, and final structure. For example, the introduction of organic components to an inorganic sol–gel system leaded to the formation of thicker and more flexible films that enhance the electrochemical behavior and improve the compatibility with different organic top coatings. The most recent trends in corrosion protection is focused on developing active sol–gel coatings to provide self-healing ability to the coating and to limit the use of volatile organic compounds in the preparation of sol-gel solutions.
