Those who were fortunate enough to participate in the 7th ISGS Online Summer School: Hybrid Materials: cutting-edge applications, held over two half-days in early September, were privileged to experience a unique opportunity to learn from specialists across a wide range of sol-gel disciplines, once again affirming the breadth and diversity of our community. The event was originally scheduled to be held as a traditional ISGS Sol-Gel Summer School at the Jaume I University of Castellón in Spain, but the Covid-19 global pandemic required the organisers to adapt the format of the event for online delivery. Their success in transforming this iconic School is evident from the 65 emerging researchers from around the world who registered for the event, which was twice the number of participants involved in the earlier Summer Schools in this series. Although, as expected, the online participation levels varied across the two days, there were never fewer than 50 people online at any one time, with around 60 participants for most of the lectures.
