Call for Ulrich Award 2017

Donald R. Ulrich Award recognizes outstanding contributions in sol-gel processes made by young researchers. The Award granted in remembrance of Prof. Dr. Donald R. Ulrich is given since 1991 during the International Sol-Gel Conference.

The awardee/s will receive a Diplome, and will present his/her work when receiving the Award at the ISGS Conference. The awardee/s will be exempted of Conference registration fee.


Eligible candidates

The candidate must be member of ISGS by 3rd September 2017 (the first day of Sol-Gel2017 conference).

The candidate must be active in sol-gel research.  The time elapsed from his/her thesis defense must be less than 10 years to the date of application.


Call for nominations

The call for nominations will be posted on the ISGS website in November of the year previous to the ISGS Conference. The deadline for nomination will be announced at the same time.

Candidates must provide

i) CV (in which a date of thesis defense should be specified)

ii) List of publications

iii) Brief description of his/her present and future involvement in sol-gel.

iv) Two recommendation letters


Selection of candidates

A distinguished advisor committee lead by a delegated person will propose to the ISGS Board a selection of candidates on the basis of their contributions to the field and projection to the future. The last Life Achievement and a previous Ulrich Awardee will be members of the Committee.

The ISGS Board will announce the name/s of awardee/s 90 days before the International Sol-Gel Conference.

Announcement of Ulrich Award 2017

The ISGS is proud to announce that the recipients of the Ulrich Award for 2017 are:

- Vladimir and Alexandr Vinogradov, ITMO University , Russia

- Tim Fellinger, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

The ISGS board decided in collaboration with the selection committee (Head: Prof. David Avnir) to give 2 prizes for 3 recipients.

Single prize is shared by Vladimir and Alexandr Vinogradov for their joint achievements.

Those recipients will give award lectures at Sol-Gel conference in Liege, Thursday morning award session.


ISGS Awards

Three different categories of awards have been created to recognize the quality of research and communications. They are awarded during International SolGel Conference or ISGS SummerSchool.

  • Life Achievement Award

The ISGS Life Achievement Award honors the life time contribution of a man or a woman to enriching sol-gel science.

  • Donald R. Ulrich Award (Basic and Applied Science / Product or Product Oriented R&D)

The award is granted in remembrance of Prof. Dr. Donald R. Ulrich, who pioneered the US Air Force structural materials chemistry research program. He established and managed major national and international research programs that were fundamental for the existence of the Sol-Gel field. More >>

  • ISGS Best poster Award

Each edition of the ISGS SummerSchool or Sol-gel Conference gives the opportunity to highlight the work of young researchers. Posters are selected for both the scientific quality of the work and  the presentation of the scientific information on the poster.

The ISGS is proud to announce that the recipient of the Ulrich Award for 2015 is Doctor Go Kawamura from Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan.

Dr Kawamura has been doing research in the sol-gel science community since 2003 when he was a bachelor student at Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan. He has studied optical and photocatalytical properties of sol-gel derived materials such as polysilsesquioxane and mesoporous metal oxides, both of them were deposited with noble metal nanoparticles which exhibit surface plasmon resonance. He has 74 publication sin ISI international journals, including 21 first-authored papers.

> Life Achievement Award 2015


The ISGS is proud to announce that the recipient of the Life Achievement Award for 2015 is Professor Clément Sanchez from college de France, Paris.

Clément Sanchez is Professor at the Collège de France, the most highly recognized French Institution, where he holds the Chair of Chemistry of Hybrid Materials. He was Director of the Laboratoire de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Paris (UMR 7574, University of Pierre and Marie Curie-Collège de France-CNRS) from 1999 to 2013. In the past years, he has been Director of Research at the French Council Research (CNRS) and Professor at l’Ecole Polytechnique. He had a PhD from the University of Paris VI (UPMC) and he did a post-doctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley.
