Sol-Gel Processing for Conventional and Alternative Energy
Volume 2
Aparicio, Mario; Jitianu, Andrei; Klein, Lisa C. (Eds.)
This book:
– organizes the information about sol-gel processing in energy systems into one volume
– addresses energy applications of materials both in terms of energy conversion and in terms of energy storage
– discusses the role of sol-gel processing in meeting the challenge of making solar energy affordable
– address other ways to make conventional energy and alternative energy affordable and clean
Sol-Gel Processing for Conventional and Alternative Energy is a comprehensive source of information on the use of sol-gel processing in materials in energy systems, conversion, storage, and generation. The volume editors include numerous applications, primarily in nuclear fuel processing, electrolytes for fuel cells, and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). In addition to examining contemporary processing, properties, and industrial applications, Sol-Gel Processing for Conventional and Alternative Energy identifies materials challenges presented by conventional and alternative energy generation that require new materials and innovative processing. Each chapter is written by an internationally respected researcher. The book provides a state-of-the-art treatment of different aspects of materials for energy production, with a focus on processing, and covers related topics such as carbon sequestration, clean energy, and biofuels.
Content Level: Research
Sol-Gel Processing for Conventional and Alternative Energy is ideal for researchers working in industry, academia, and national laboratories with interest and professional competence in materials for energy storage and energy conversion. This book will also be useful to senior year and graduate students pursuing a degree in chemistry, electrochemistry, solid state physics, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering.

The Book series – Advances in Sol-Gel Derived Materials and Technologies
Sol-gel chemistry has been practiced for more than a century. However, the rapid growth of the field in the past 30 years has been due to the integration of sol-gel techniques into other areas of materials science such as polymers, soft matter, nanostructured materials, and biomaterials. The resulting multidisciplinary approach has allowed the emergence of highly complex materials and new functionalities. Today, sol-gel chemistry is used in a wide range of industrial sectors and applications from catalysis, sensors, and optics to biomedicine and energy to cite a few.
Suggested by Dr. David Packer, Executive Editor at Springer, a new book series entitled “Advances in Sol-Gel Derived Materials and Technologies” will be published during the next years in collaboration with the International Sol-Gel Society and devoted to fostering an integrative approach to materials and technologies that are prepared and applied using the latest developments in sol-gel methods.
Prof. Dr. Michel A. Aegerter (JSST editor-in-chief, Bottens, Switzerland) and Dr. Michel Prassas (Manager External Technologies Europe at the Corning European Technology Center, Avon, France) will serve as Editors-in-Chief for this new book series.
Several areas have been identified, and for each of them a team of 2-3 editors will be selected.
Each book will be written by internationally recognized experts, and presents a state-of-the-art overview of a particular topic. The series will serve as an authoritative source for a broad audience of individuals involved in research and product development, and will be of value to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in materials science and engineering and solid-state chemistry.
